Today is the long-awaited release day for Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop and Server (and Netbook) editions. There’s a bunch of updates and improvements over 9.04 as described on the release notes.
So get ready to bittorrent the latest release, burn it on a CD.. and most importantly.. pass it on to friends.
Or sell it! You can sell a Ubuntu CD , I just don’t understand how computer shops don’t do such a simple service (that’s material for another post).
So, before going on testing and installing and judging how good or bad this new edition will be… think of a way to contribute back! GNU/Linux and Ubuntu wouldn’t be here without the help of lots and lots of people making it happen. Creating this comprehensive software distribution for themselves.. and sharing it with all the world.

Browsing trough forums I found out I needed to issue
the following command to install the decss lib to play dvds:
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

Non è stato difficile trovarlo grazie a google, ma è molto chiaro e “to the point”.
Se vi scocciate di leggerlo basta dare il seguente comando in un terminale:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-applets
e configurate il suid root per fare in modo da controllare la frequenza della CPU
direttamente dall’applet posta sulla barra in alto.
Ha funzionato subito!!! yeah!
Bene, siamo arrivati ad un punto di equilibrio tra la mia voglia di effetti desktop e i miei tentativi falliti di installare correttamente i driver Nvidia per la mia Geforce 6600 AGP.
Col kernel generic uscito dalla nuova fiammante ubuntu 7.04 nessuna versione dei driver Nvidia ha voluto saperne di funzionare (schermo nero, computer bloccato, Xorg che non parte)
ovviamente il problema sarà dovuto al fatto che ho 2 monitor e voglio usare twinview.
Ma su slackware tutto funzionava a meraviglia col kernel 2.6.17.11 e i driver nvidia 8774!!!
Che fare? semplice, compilare il kernel 2.6.17.11 in Ubuntu e reinstallare i driver nvidia vecchia versione, ovvero 8774! Come per incanto tutto funziona (a tra poco le note dolenti) il doppio monitor alla risoluzione giusta, e una discreta accelerazione 3D (poco in verità glxgears si ferma sui 2000fps). Ho provato compiz e beryl, entrambi mi bloccano Xorg e devo terminare la sessione grafica con ctrl+alt+backspace!
Mi devo accontentare di beryl su XGL sul portatile, mentre sul pc fisso sto senza desktop 3D 
aspettando di avere tempo per provare altre combinazioni di kernel+driver nvidia+compiz, resto comunque soddisfatto!

ho trovato il modo di far andare XGL+Beryl sulla mia scheda video ATI del portatile! una bomba, non vedo l’ora di far vedere agli amici cos’è la vera trasparenza che windows vista non avrà mai!!!! (per non parlare del cubo rotante e delle finestre che molleggiano…
Sul pc fisso dove ho una scheda Nvidia le cose sono state molto più complicate!!! i driver nvidia non ne hanno vuluto sapere di funzionare … more on this on a next post!
