Open letter to FMI

Filed under: General — breakthru @ 5:36 pm

Reading from a news article (in Spanish: http://es.noticias.yahoo.com/10/20091001/tts-oestp-fmi-espana-ca02f96.html) I got really angry at the general press statements made by the International Monetary Fund (FMI).

I really would like to know what they think about this issue I write clearly here:
—–
What makes you think you can predict the future?

I’m a private citizen angry at the press statements published by
your institution.
How can you be so arrogant to think you can predict what will
happen in the future regarding inflation, employment, taxes…
This way of announcing your results on statistics is actually
damaging your own image in the general public.

Are you aware of the issue?

Thanks,
A citizen.

Working at night.. continued

Filed under: General — breakthru @ 3:30 am

Lately I’ve asked myself the question.. is working at night better?
Well my answer would be.. yes.
The trouble is that actually.. I don’t feel satisfied with the work I get done at night.
There’s less feedback from collaborators, there’s a sync problem against others (their
requests come in the morning.. and you work on them at night…)
And the most important thing I’ve experimented with working at night… I do tend
to drift A LOT! From the wonders of general relativity to the funny videos posted
on facebook, to some thinking on economy… So work becomes less important.
Of all this, I found out… I CAN DO THAT IN THE OFFICE!!!
And suddenly.. since you were in the office on time.. your drift of attention is not
a problem anymore. If someone comes talk to me, or needs some work done..
that will have more importance with that person right there :)
So.. there is no question.. working during the same hours your collaborator work, that
is the right thing to do.

Mastering communication

Filed under: General — breakthru @ 12:19 pm

Whatever you do, talking to other people will be the most important part
of your work.
What would be the best scientist of the world if he cannot tell others what he thinks?

Today I heard a talk about gestural communication. That is equally important
we must assume.

So how do we master good conversation abilities? I think just by practice.
Next time you chat with friends, you’ll notice their body language.

On conspiracy theories

Filed under: General — breakthru @ 12:42 am

I’d like to cite George Carlin, who is likely
to put an end on ALL conspiracy theories, with the simple
words he says in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h2EYPvQDqE during a boring TV show.

” You have to give them credit,
they’re out in the open, they’re not even
trying to conceive it anymore.
They’re openly driving the bus, and we’re
all in the back.
You don’t need a formal conspiracy
when interests CONVERGE, these people
went to the same universities, have been
on the same board of directors they’re on
the same country clubs they have likely interests
they don’t need to call a meeting, they
know what it’s good for them, and they’re
getting it, and there used to be seven oil
companies and there’s now three, there will soon
be two, the things that matter in this country
have been reduced in choice to have two
political parties, there are a few insurance
company there’s six or seven information thing but
if you want a BAGEL you have 23 flavours cause you
have the illusion, you have the illusion of choice,
there’s no choice on the things that are important there’s
only the illusion of choice. “

On Relativity

Filed under: General, Math — breakthru @ 1:28 am

To all my mates interested in Physics:
I was reading some fundamentals of relativity,

It’s interesting how everything started by Maxwell equations, and how classical mechanics
is not invariant for Lorentz transformations.
The thing that struck me is that the problem had three possible solutions:
1) Electromagnetism is only Lorentz-invariant and mechanics is only invariant on Galilean transformations.
2) The laws of physics must be Lorentz-invariant so mechanics needs to be fixed.
3) The laws of physics must be Galilean invariant so electromagnetism had to be fixed.

It’s so strange that Einstein succeeded in (2), because even today, electromagnetic and mechanical events
are not unified, we have “matter waves” and “light waves” and they’re treated separately (one follows
Dirac equation, the other, Maxwell equations).

I am so impressed at how good is the solution to inertial mass and gravitational mass unification, so that
inertial mass curves spacetime, we can only move on geodesic of spacetime, so we feel a “force” of gravity. Yet I think the mass-energy equivalence has got a lot more to tell us, as we constantly change
between them with a conversion factor.. we then go on and treat them differently.

Awaiting comments :)

E adesso querelateci tutti!

Filed under: General — breakthru @ 1:25 am

E adesso, querelatemi!

Is working at night better than working in the morning?

Filed under: General — breakthru @ 1:50 am

I like to work during the night. I feel I have more time.. I’m more relaxed.. and if I had something to do during the day well.. it simply has to wait because it’s later than 1 in the morning and I’m all alone at my computer, working.. and by 4am I’m usually happy with what I’ve done.
So.. is it good or bad? does it work? Why can’t I just be like the other people who go 8am in the office to
just laze off all day?
